Fast facts about mental health and mental illness
Mental health and mental illness are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. “Mental health” is a concept similar to “physical health”: it refers to a state of well-being.
Psychological treatments
The APA identifies “best research evidence” as a key element of evidence-based practice (APA Presidential Task Force, 2006). This resource lists psychological treatments supported by published efficacy data, based on criteria from the Society of Clinical Psychology

Individual and Couples Therapy sessions are typically 50 minutes long. In some cases, your first session with the therapist will be a little longer.
Therapy can range from short-term to longer term depending on the client’s case and their goals. This can be discussed with your therapist, and the two of you can always collaboratively assess your timeline and progression.
There are several approaches that can be used for depression, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). However, there is no single answer for the best therapy approach for depression, because everyone's experience and what feels right for them is different. Layla's care coordinators take your specific needs into account to help find a therapist suited to your needs.
Ultimately, you decide which therapist you want to proceed with based on your care coordinator's recommendations that are informed by the details you provide in your intake form and in your matching call. If you don't feel like the options suggested match what you are looking for, your care coordinator will be happy to discuss other options.
Several of our therapists offer sessions on weekends, and you can let us know of that preference when you sign up and we will do our best to accommodate.
Layla takes your privacy and the security of your information seriously. Electronic personal information shared with Layla is stored in a secure and encrypted way. Video sessions are not recorded. You can learn more about our privacy practices here.
