What is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic therapy is a body-centred approach that works to build awareness of how emotions show up, recognize physiological signs of distress, and support with regulating your nervous system. It recognizes that emotions, stress and historical experience aren't only experienced in the mind, but can show up through the body as feelings of tension, restlessness, discomfort among others.

Somatic therapies often approach mental health and experiences of distress from a "bottom-up" approach, supporting you to identify signs of distress in the body, understand what they may be indicating and work to process them with the support of your therapist.

While more traditional therapies such as talk-based or thought-based approaches can support us with analysis and understanding of our emotions – somatic therapy recognizes that our bodies can provide us with insight and wisdom about our emotional experiences as well.

How can somatic therapy help?

Somatic therapy is a gentle approach, paced to suit your individual needs. This form of therapy can support how you:

  • Process experiences that feel hard to put into words
  • Supporting you to recognize distress responses in your nervous system and how experiences of fight/flight/freeze show up in your body
  • Raise awareness of how emotions are experienced in the body
  • Reconnect with sensations that may feel numb, distant, or disconnected
  • Build a felt sense of safety and stability in your body that you can carry into daily life
