What it is

This support group is for individuals in Ontario and Alberta who are currently coping with diabetes and are looking for additional support to better cope with the mental health struggles associated with diabetes management. The support group is a safe and open environment for individuals with shared experiences to discuss their challenges with managing diabetes while increasing their coping skills and abilities. Participants can expect to explore the current difficulties in their journey and be better prepared to identify their own symptoms to implement skills and sustain wellness.

More about this program

As part of the Living Well with Diabetes group, registered participants will work in a group format with a dedicated therapist to build self-management skills that will help manage the mental health impacts of diabetes and foster hope for the future.

Throughout the 4-week program, participants will join weekly online sessions to work on a variety of skills and techniques in a safe and supportive environment. Participants will learn skills from evidence-based practices including CBT for increasing the understanding of thoughts and feelings as well as DBT for emotional regulation, increasing acceptance of life's challenges and improving relationships.

Topics covered include: the impact of diabetes on mental health, living a value-driven life, actively engaging in the change process, improving coping skills and acceptance.

Is the Living Well with Diabetes group right for me?

The Living Well with Diabetes Group is designed for adults over the age of 18 who are affected by diabetes related mental health struggles impacting their wellness and quality of life. 

At this time, the program is open to residents of Ontario and Alberta.

How much does the Living Well with Diabetes group cost?

This program is offered at a total of $250 which covers all 4 sessions of the program. 

This program is covered under most extended benefits plans. Please make sure to check specific coverage or ask for our assistance in helping you find information about your specific benefits plan.


How does the online group format for the Living Well with Diabetes group work?

There will be up to 12 participants in each group. Each online group session will be structured with an opening check-in to bring participants into the group session. Each session will include a brief psychoeducational component followed by a discussion around the topic of the day. Clients are encouraged to engage with each other and the material at their own pace and comfort. Materials including handouts and worksheets will be provided prior to the start of each group.

Sessions will be conducted through secure video, and participants will be asked to commit to confidentiality. Only your first name will be used with other group members and sessions will not be recorded.

What will I need to access the online sessions?

All sessions will be completed online through Layla’s secure video portal. Participants are required to use a desktop or laptop computer (no mobile phones).

Waitlist options are available

Registration is open on a rolling basis and each group will only remain open while spots are available (12 per group) or until five business days before the start of the group.
